Avian Behavior International is home to a wide variety of birds near Lake Wohlford between Escondido and gorgeous Valley Center, California. Our flock is used for a many projects, with the underlying purpose of promoting preservation through education, progressive behavior management techniques, and the depth of the human-animal relationship.

How you can help

At ABI, we have two levels to our volunteer program: Volunteer Animal Care Assistant and Volunteer Trainer. Each designation is dependent on previous experience. All volunteer duties consist of supporting staff with feeding, cleaning, groundskeeping, and providing our birds with valuable enrichment opportunities. We work with each volunteer to provide time for handling and socialization with the birds.  In some cases, volunteers may graduate to assist with our Experiences, raptor handling, and more advanced positive reinforcement training skills. For the comfort of our birds, we require a minimum of 4 hours per week for 3 months. Shifts are from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and are generally the same day each week. Volunteers are required to wear sturdy shoes and professional outdoor clothing.
