SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

General Avian Care Volunteers support the daily husbandry and treatment of all Avian Ambassadors at the Avian Behavior Conservancy. This includes feeding, cleaning, and providing exceptional care of ABC’s avian ambassadors, while working alongside ABC staff and interns. Volunteers will work closely with interns, staff and other volunteers to complete the daily checklist and special projects. Depending on the shift within the roost, volunteers will experience different duties, qualifications, skills, and expectations.

TIME COMMITMENT

Like other volunteer positions, the time commitment requirement is 4 hours a week for a 3 month minimum. The General Avian care shift happens every day from 8 am to 12 pm unless otherwise noted.

PROGRESSION

This position is a general volunteer position, which allows new volunteers to learn the basics of bird care. Volunteers will learn Avian Behavior protocols for daily tasks, cleaning, and preparing food. There maybe some light maintenance duties to assist staff and interns with, such as re-perching aviaries, light groundswork, and painting.

JOB DUTIES

  •  Comply with all state and federal wildlife regulations and Avian Behavior permitting
  •  Shadow staff, interns, or advanced volunteers for daily tasks
  •  Daily cleaning of enclosures including but not limited to hosing, raking, scrubbing wall panels, and providing fresh water
  •  Prepare diets as directed by staff
  •  Contribute detail for all daily bird records as necessary
  •  Assist with bird enrichment as directed and assigned by staff
  •  Aid in special projects
  •  Other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrate Avian Behavior’s core values through guest and team interactions

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  •  Open to any volunteer
  •  Required for a volunteer who has been away for longer than 6 months unless otherwise determined by the Education and Outreach Coordinator
  •  Some duties may require bending, kneeling, twisting, lifting and/or standing for long periods of time*
  •  Ability to follow a checklist for safety and efficiency
  •  Patience and understanding of training and husbandry protocols
  •  Eagerness to learn
  •  Willingness to clean
  •  Positive attitude
  •  Exceptional attention to detail

*Physical limitations might make completing all the duties assigned in this job description challenging. Avian Behavior staff will discuss options to adjust or modify some of the requirements for volunteers who may have special physical requirements.

EXPECTATIONS

  •  If you cannot make a shift, you are responsible for removing yourself from the shift. If it is within 24 hours of the scheduled shift, you must  reach out to the Education and Outreach Coordinator or Avian Care team staff to let someone know you are unable to come in for your shift.
