Avian Behavior International was originally founded in 2013 to capture audience engagement in order to support avian conservation research worldwide. And to that end, we were successful. From Andean condors to toucans, cockatoos and burrowing owls to hornbills, our birds helped us fundraise thousands of dollars each year to support these critical conservation programs. But birds are in crisis. African raptors are declining precipitously, and through citizen science-collected data such as e-Bird, we are even seeing lower numbers in birds such as red-tailed hawks that falling. This was our wake-up call that what we were doing was not enough. We broadened our scope by setting up the Avian Behavior Conservancy as a vehicle not just to power research in house, but to broaden our partnerships around the world for the sake of birds everywhere.
